This custom attic renovation in East Aurora, NY transformed an underutilized upper level into a warm, functional, and thoughtfully designed bedroom retreat complete with a private en suite bathroom. Working within the challenges of the home’s original cape-style architecture, our team carefully designed the space around the existing sloped ceilings, exposed structural elements, and unique attic layout to create interiors that feel both intentional and highly livable.
Design Approach
The custom attic bedroom was designed to feel calm, layered, and inviting while maximizing every inch of the unique footprint. Careful attention was given to ceiling transitions, natural light, built-in functionality, and material balance to ensure the smaller-scale spaces felt open and cohesive despite the architectural limitations of the attic structure.
The adjoining bathroom renovation focused on blending modern comfort with historic character through thoughtful material selections, warm wood tones, custom finishes, and carefully scaled fixtures that complement the architecture of the home. Every detail throughout the project was designed to feel cohesive with the original structure while improving functionality for modern everyday living.
Project Overview
Throughout the renovation, preserving the character of the home remained central to the design approach. Original wood beams and historic materials salvaged from the property were thoughtfully incorporated back into the space, helping maintain an authentic connection to the home’s history. To further enhance the character of the renovation, reclaimed wood sourced from historic barns throughout Western New York was integrated into select architectural and design details, bringing warmth, texture, and a sense of timeless craftsmanship into the finished interiors.
